Sierra Community Access Television is proud to announce two innovative new projects that highlight the creativity, community engagement and rich local history that SCATV2 is known for — from a dynamic new music video to an insightful historical series, SCATV2 continues to captivate and inspire audiences on the western slope of El Dorado County.
“Preserving the History of Coloma” Series
In another exciting development, SCATV2 is proud to announce the premiere of Preserving the History of Coloma, a captivating four-episode series about Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park.
Produced by Gary Campbell, the series provides an in-depth look at the historical restoration efforts in Coloma, the birthplace of the Gold Rush. Through interviews with historians and park rangers, exclusive footage and behind-the-scenes insights, viewers will discover the challenges and triumphs of preserving Coloma’s architectural treasures.
The four episodes are as follows:
Episode one: The Shop — A deep dive into the preservation of structures over 170 years old in the heart of Gold Rush history.
Episode two: St. John’s Church — A focus on the meticulous restoration of St. John’s Catholic Church, built in 1858.
Episode three: The Saw Mill — An exploration of the legacy of Sutter’s Mill, with insights from Interpretive Lead Holly Thane.
Episode four: Emmanuel Church — A look at the inspiring restoration journey of the first church built in Coloma during the post-Gold Rush era.
This series has been made possible through generous funding from the Latrobe Fund and Sapling Fund. SCATV2 extends its heartfelt thanks for their support in preserving California’s rich history. The series is now available to watch on Comcast Channel 2 and SCATV2’s YouTube Channel.
SCATV2 is excited to premiere a unique new music video titled “We’re Telling Your Tale,” created by SCATV2 Program Director George Sabato. The video blends the power of creative writing, modern technology and local storytelling. Sabato crafted the song and lyrics with the help of ChatGPT, inspired by SCATV2’s commitment to sharing the stories of the community. Using tools like Lyricstosong.com and Canva, Sabato produced a visually stunning video that captures the essence of SCATV2’s mission to tell local tales in a dynamic and artistic way.
“I wanted to embrace technology creatively while showcasing how SCATV2 brings local stories to life,” said Sabato.
The music video is available for viewing on SCATV2’s YouTube Channel and will also air on Comcast Channel 2.

‘Gold Hill Samurai’ making its television debut
- By News release
- Jun 24, 2020
This month marks the first anniversary of the American River Conservancy event WakamatsuFest150, commemorating the sesquicentennial of the first Japanese to settle in America. To have its story told, ARC commissioned for the play “Gold Hill Samurai” to be written, produced and performed at WakamatsuFest150. Sierra Community Access Television-Channel 2 now brings that story to viewers.
As is noted on seetheelephant.net, “‘Gold Hill Samurai’ is a new play inspired by the life of Okei-san and the earliest Japanese settlers in California who founded the Wakamatsu Tea & Silk colony. ‘Gold Hill Samurai’ first premiered at the WakamatsuFest150. In 2018 American River Conservancy commissioned See The Elephant to create a play for the 150th anniversary of the Wakamatsu Colony in Coloma. Jamie Van Camp, in collaboration with ARC docents and many from the Japanese American community, set to work researching the history and creating a theatrical re-telling that would highlight the struggles and triumphs at the heart of the Aizu people’s migration to California.”
Under the guidance of program director Gary Campbell, SCA-TV2’s all-volunteer camera crew of talented videographers captured “Gold Hill Samurai” as it depicts life at the Wakamatsu Tea & Silk Colony. This historical site is open for tours and is situated at 941 Cold Springs Road, Placerville.
Viewers can now sit back to relive the area’s significance of the Japanese local experience. Tune in to Comcast Channel 2 or program your DVR to enjoy “Gold Hill Samurai” in sequential episodes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings (June 24, 25 and 26), at 7 p.m. Similarly, watch the entire video with limited interruptions Sunday, June 28, at 7 p.m. Online video on demand will be available on YouTube scatv2 beginning Monday, June 29.
Memorial Day ceremonies to again be virtual
El Dorado County Memorial Day ceremonies will again be pre-recorded, broadcast and streamed.
“Last month we faced a ‘go, no-go’ decision whether to hold a public Memorial Day ceremony. At the time El Dorado County was struggling to drop out of the COVID-19 orange tier, which restricts public gatherings. We’re still not there. So, there’s no safe option but to hold another virtual ceremony, as was done on previous Memorial and Veterans Days,” said El Dorado County Veterans Alliance President Gary Campbell.
Last year’s virtual ceremonies were seen by over 32,000 viewers on Sierra Community Access Television (cable Channel 2) and on county veterans Facebook pages. Again, this Memorial Day, the pre-recorded ceremony will be broadcast over Channel 2 and streamed on Facebook at 11 a.m. Facebook users will be able to see the ceremony online at the following pages:
• Facebook.com/1ElDoradoCountyMilitaryVeterans/
• Facebook.com/EDCVeteransAlliance
• Facebook.com/groups/EDCVeteransMonument
This year’s Memorial Day ceremony will recognize the valiant and heroic feats of El Dorado County’s Capt. Paul Jacobs, U.S. Navy, who died in December. He is credited as having led the most significant humanitarian mission in U.S. military history when he and his crew of the USS Kirk — the smallest warship in the U.S. Navy — rescued more than 30,000 Vietnamese sailors, their families and refugees from certain capture, incarceration, torture or execution in the final moments of the Vietnam War. A plaque honoring Jacobs’ extraordinary accomplishment will be dedicated and placed on the Honor Wall of the EDC Veterans Monument.

Lights, camera … Gold Bug action
Park launches virtual tour for students--videos produced in association with Sierra Community Access Television.
" Charles Basham said the program will help teachers and parents meet the challenges associated with distance learning. There are study materials, photos, vocabulary activities and simple assignments that encourage critical thinking.
The videos and supporting materials are available for free in the Teacher’s Corner section of Gold Bug Park’s website goldbugpark.org.
Basham said the scope of the project quickly grew and he realized the need for some expert help — especially with the video. He contacted Gary Campbell, director of programming and development at Sierra Community Access Television in Cameron Park. Without hesitation Campbell adopted the concept and assembled a volunteer video production team."
" The result is a fast-paced, five-episode video featuring the activities of a typical field trip: mine tour, gold panning, exploring the stamp mill, blacksmithing and a chat with Gentleman Bandit Black Bart. Each episode features a park docent; Cameron Park residents Carol, Carly and Colby Wahl appear as guests." View the videos also at Sierra Community Accessl Television YouTube Channel.
The Sacramento History Museum asked to include the program in its Teachers'
Resources for Gold Rush studies. The State Library and the El Dorado
County Office of Education are including it in their teacher resources
as well.
